If you’re looking for all the latest on AMD’s latest mid-range GPU, we now have a full AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT review, where you can see our benchmark figures in a range of games and see how the new AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT compares with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070.
The Radeon RX 7800 XT has now been officially announced by AMD at Gamescom. The new GPU is designed to fill the gap in AMD’s lineup of GPUs based on the RDNA 3 architecture, with a current big leap between the $269 Radeon RX 7600 and the $799 Radeon RX 7900 XT. Having a GPU in this spot will enable AMD to effectively battle the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti and GeForce RTX 4070. You can see the Radeon RX 7800 XT specs, price, and release date below.
The Radeon RX 7800 XT is based on the AMD Navi 32 GPU, which sits between the small Navi 33 chip used in the Radeon 7600 (32 compute units) and the flagship Navi 31 die used in the Radeon RX 7900 XTX (96 compute units).
The Radeon RX 7800 XT has 60 compute units, positioning it around half way between these two GPUs. That gives it 3,840 stream processors and 60 corresponding ray tracing cores. The GPU also sports 120 of AMD’s AI Accelerator matrix cores, which are the equivalent of Nvidia’s Tensor cores. AMD hasn’t made much use of these AI Accelerators yet, but a recent video by Moore’s Law is Dead said there was talk that these cores could be used in a future, more advanced version of FSR.
‘Eventually, FSR 3, maybe then it’ll be called 4.0 in six months or something, is going to get some kind of an update to leverage the AI hardware in RDNA 3, he stated, adding that it could add ‘exclusive upgrades to image quality for RDNA 3 products. That sounds like it’s coming eventually.’
Unlike the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8GB and RTX 4070, the Radeon RX 7800 XT also has 16GB of VRAM. It uses GDDR6 memory, which is attached to a 256-bit interface and clocked at 2425MHz (19.5GHz effective), giving it a total bandwidth of 624GB/s. This is again a big benefit over the Nvidia GPUs’ memory systems, with the RTX 4070 only having 12GB of memory attached to a 192-bit interface.

AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT release date
The Radeon RX 7800 XT release date wa Wednesday, September 6, 2023.
We’ve been impressed by previous RDNA 3 GPUs for the most part. There are some disappointments – the ray tracing performance isn’t as good as GPUs based on the Nvidia Ada architecture, and there’s no AI frame generation tech, such as DLSS 3. However, the performance for the money is generally solid, and both the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7600 are listed on our guide to the best graphics card.
