AMD recently unveiled the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE, which is a cut-down version of the RX 7900 XT and was supposed to be exclusively available in China. However, a system builder in Australia has included the card in its configurations, hinting that the card will see wider availability.
Pitched as a successor to the RX 6800XT, the new ‘Golden Rabbit Edition’ card features four fewer compute units than the Navi 31 GPU used in the RX 7900 XT and has slower clock speeds too. This has been matched with an MSRP of just $649, putting it $150 lower in price than the RX 7900 XT and $50 cheaper than the RTX 4070.
Early reviews from China also show it outperforming the Nvidia RTX 4070 with performance on par with the previous generation RX 6950 XT, all of which suggests it would actually be a card that would have widespread appeal right now, to those wanting to maximize non-ray tracing performance for 1440p gaming. Currently, AMD’s lineup stops at the RX 7900 XT before dropping all the way to the far less powerful RX 7600.
For now, though, the card is still largely going to remain out of the reach of buyers in Europe and the US, leaving us instead waiting for the possible launch of the RX 7800 and RX 7700, to fill out the mid-range of AMD’s graphics card offerings.
