Philips unveils massive 49-inch Evnia 49M2C8900 OLED gaming monitor

With a 5,210 x 1,440 double-QHD resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, and DisplayHDR TrueBlack 400 rating, this mammoth display is sure to turn heads.

Philips Evnia 49M2C8900

Philips just unveiled the Philips Evnia 49M2C8900, a new OLED gaming monitor that sports a colossal 49-inch curved display with a 240Hz refresh rate, for perhaps the ultimate in giant gaming screen goodness. It’s not the first 49-inch OLED – that honor goes to Samsung with its G95SC – but it’s competitively priced, potentially making it a worthy contender for our best gaming monitor list.

With its 5,210 x 1,440 pixel, double-QHD resolution, this 1800R curved display is the size of two 27-inch monitors sat side by side, providing a huge super-wide view and masses of desktop space. Its use of an OLED panel also means it has just a 0.03ms response time – 100x faster than most LCDs – that along with its 240Hz refresh rate should make it perfect even for ultra-competitive first-person shooters and other such fast-paced games. Your graphics card might struggle to drive those 7.5 million pixels but at least the screen will keep up.

Also thanks to its OLED panel, the screen produces truly black pixels, making for a massive contrast ratio and a DisplayHDR TrueBlack 400 rating. It can’t reach the TrueBlack 600 standard as its maximum brightness is 450 nits – still plenty for most uses but not as dazzling as some panels.

Further boosting its video-watching and entertainment credentials, the display has DTS Sound speakers rated to 30W of output. That compares to a typical 5W of output on most monitors, if you even get speakers. Additional features include an integrated KVM switch, a VESA mounting point, a height-adjustable stand, and a LowBlue mode.

Priced at £1649.99 – US pricing is yet to be announced, the 49M2C8900 is around the same price as the Samsung model. We’ve yet to test either panel so it’s sure to be a scrap for supremacy when we finally get our hand on them. For both panels, though, that pricing is surprisingly reasonable considering the premium OLED panels have tended to demand – the LG 27GR95QE, for instance, still costs $800.

Philips Evnia 49M2C8900 release date

The Philips Evnia 49M2C8900 release date is mid-September 2023.

Philips Evnia 49M2C8900 price

The Philips Evnia 49M2C8900 price is £1649.99 (~$1,800), making this an expensive gaming monitor but it offers decent value considering many 27-inch OLED gaming monitors are still $1,000.
