Juicy details of the forthcoming Intel 14th gen CPU lineup are now coming thick and fast, with the latest leak reportedly revealing the release date of the new Raptor Lake refresh range of processors. The rumored clock speeds and core counts of the new lineup of Intel processors have also been revealed over previous leaks.
The latest leak concerns the Intel 14th gen release date, with PC tech gossip site VideoCardz citing its own sources for the information. According to the site, there will be an Intel 14th gen ad embargo that expires on Monday, October 16, 2023, 6am PST. The Intel 14th gen release date is Tuesday, October 17, 6am PST, according to the site.
However, VideoCardz, also says that this release date will only be for the enthusiast-level K-series CPUs, such as the Core i9-14900K, Core i7-14700K, and Core i5-14600K, which have unlocked multipliers for overclocking. The standard, non-K series CPUs with locked multipliers aren’t expected to be released until January 2024, according to the report.
The details of Intel 14th gen specs for several CPUs have also been leaked. Reportedly, the Intel Core i9-14900K (or possibly the Core 9 Ultra 14900K, depending on how Intel brands it), will have a boost clock of up to 6GHz, using Intel Thermal Velocity Boost, compared to 5.8GHz on the Core i9-13900K. This frequency was previously only attainable by the limited edition Core i9-13900KS, so it looks like this clock speed could now be filtering down to the top-end mainstream chip.
This leak comes courtesy of Benchlife, which also has some interesting information about other chips in the range. The site confirms a previous rumor that the Core i7-14700K has 20 cores, rather than the 16 in the Core i7-13700K.
However, this leak also expands on the clock speed information, claiming that the Core i7-14700K will have a Turbo Boost Max Technology 3 (TBMT3) clock speed of 5.6GHz, in addition to the usual 5.5GHz P-Core boost clock. A recent Core i7-14700K benchmark leak also showed the P-cores running at 5.5GHz, and the E-cores running at 4.3GHz, with an apparent ability to overclock the CPU to 6GHz.
However, while the 14700K looks set to get more cores than the 13700K, the Core i5 14600K is listed as having the same 14 cores as the Core i5-13600K, comprising six P-Cores and eight E-Cores. The difference between the 13600K and the 14600K is mainly the clock speed, with the P-Core boost speed increasing from 5.1GHz to 5.3GHz. A recent leak also confirmed these specs in 14600K CPU-Z screenshots.
We’ve managed to overclock the Core i5-13600K to 5.7GHz in our own tests, so it doesn’t look like there’s much of a benefit for overclockers going for the 14600K over the 13600K if these rumors are true.
While we’ve used the ‘Core ix’ branding to describe the CPUs above, it’s worth bearing in mind that Intel has recently announced its plans to drop the ‘i’ from its Core branding, so these CPUs may well end up being called the Core 7 Ultra 14700K, Core 5 Ultra 14600K, and so on. In addition, the Intel 15th gen Arrow Lake architecture is also on the horizon, with rumors of a big boost in performance over the Raptor Lake architecture.
Previous information also suggests that the Intel 14th gen socket will be LGA1700, and that the new CPUs will support both DDR4 and DDR5 memory, and will even run on old Z690 and B660 boards with a BIOS update.
