AMD Ryzen 7000 series details announced

The first details on AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors have finally been unveiled, with the Ryzen 9 7950X being the most powerful Zen 4 CPU.

AMD has lifted the lid on its upcoming Ryzen 7000 series of CPUs, revealing the first four chips that will be launching on 27th September 2022. Topping the range will be the Ryzen 9 7950X, with its 16 cores and a top clock speed of 5.7GHz.

The new chips will be the first based on AMD’s new Zen 4 architecture that brings with it a move to using TSMC’s latest 5nm manufacturing process to produce the CPU core chiplets – the IO dies will use the older 7nm process. Along with improved power efficiency, the new process has enabled AMD to ramp up the clock speed of its latest chips to speeds far beyond previous Ryzen chips. The 7950X’s turbo clock speed of 5.7GHz is 800MHz (16 per cent) faster than the Ryzen 5950X.

Thanks to a further 13 per cent (up from the previous 11 per cent AMD had mentioned) improvement in instructions per clock (IPC), Ryzen 7000 is set to provide a whopping 29 per cent jump in single-threaded performance compared to Ryzen 5000.

The other models announced are the 12-core Ryzen 9 7900X, the 8-core Ryzen 7700X and the 6-core Ryzen 5 7600X, all of which will feature turbo boost clock speeds of over 5GHz. All these new processors also include an integrated GPU but AMD hasn’t revealed further details of this aspect of the new chips.

Launching alongside the Ryzen 7000 series processors will be AMD’s new AM5 platform, replacing the now largely defunct AM4 platform (AMD has hinted there may be more processors to come for that platform). Along with a switch from DDR4 to DDR5, AM5 includes PCIe 5 support and will initially arrive in the form of four chipsets: X670 Extreme, X670, B660 Extreme and B660. Only X670 boards will be available in time for the 27th September launch date.
