According to the rumour mill, AMD is planning to drop the prices of its Navi GPUs when they launch. When the company announced the Radeon RX 5700 and 5700XT last month, the prices it listed were competitive with the equivalent GeForce RTX cards with which they would be in direct competition. Since those prices were announced, however, Nvidia has wheeled out its ‘Super’ line of graphics cards, and it seems that AMD might be revising its prices accordingly.
The prices originally announced were $379 US (around £358 inc VAT) for the RX 5700 and $449 US (around £424 inc VAT) for the RX 5700 XT. That’s fine for competing against the original RTX lineup, but these prices are now in a similar league to Nvidia’s new RTX 2060 Super (£379 inc VAT) and RTX 2070 Super (£475 inc VAT), with prices of the first-gen RTX GPUs predicted to drop as a result .
If AMD has a drop in price up its sleeve, it would allow the company to undercut the new RTX Super cards. Nvidia would then have to either drop its own prices again to stay competitive, or hope that real-time raytracing technology is considered a valuable enough feature by potential buyers to offset the additional cost.
