Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 price crashes to $549

Hot competition from the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT forces Nvidia to reduce the cost of its mid-range GPU, with $50 slashed off RTX 4070 graphics card prices.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 price drop

GPU maker Nvidia has quickly responded to the threat of the brand new AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT, with a GeForce RTX 4070 price drop. The mid-range gaming GPU originally launched at a cost of $599, but GeForce RTX 4070 graphics cards from MSI and Gigabyte are now going for just $549, while UK gamers can pick up a card for only £529.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 deal

Not only that, but this price drop isn’t just for basic stock speed models. The Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Windforce OC is currently going for just $549.99, which has a small overclock that takes the stock 2475MHz boost clock up to 2490MHz. Likewise, the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ventus 2X OC has a 2505MHz boost clock, and is also now available as a classy white RTX 4070 graphics card.

We were impressed by the GeForce RTX 4070 when we first reviewed it, putting it on our guide to the best graphics card, thanks to its excellent ray tracing performance, DLSS 3 support, and solid overall frame rates. However, AMD’s aggressive pricing for the Radeon RX 7800 XT seriously threatened the RTX 4070’s position, with our tests showing the AMD GPU beating the Nvidia chip in a number of gaming benchmarks.

Despite costing $100 less than the GeForce RTX 4070, the AMD GPU has 16GB of memory with a 256-bit interface, compared with the RTX 4070’s 12GB of memory and 192-bit interface. The AMD GPU also kicks the RTX 4070’s rear end when it comes to raw shading performance in games, and it can even handle ray tracing well.

It’s really only ray tracing performance, and support for DLSS 3, that makes the RTX 4070 worth buying, and that was getting hard to justify when it cost an extra $100. However, at a price of $549, the GeForce RTX 4070 looks like a much better deal. Decent competition is good for all of us when it comes to pricing.
