Mark Liu, chairman of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), has tipped Nvidia to overtake Intel as the largest global chip manufacturer in 2023. Nvidia GeForce graphics cards are making a huge splash in the AI world, leading to a huge rise in stock price for the California-based tech company.
Nvidia currently dominates the gaming graphics card market, despite stiff competition from AMD. But it’s the AI chip market where it’s really taking off, with incredible earnings driven by AI data centers outpacing gaming GPU margins by some distance.
In fact, Nvidia’s Q3 revenue from AI data centers were more than quadruple that of its gaming division, which is astonishing. This staggering rise in fortunes has prompted Liu, speaking at an event in Taiwan, to hail team green as 2023’s global leader in semiconductors, as reported by Chinese site, United Daily News.
Nvidia’s data center revenues, standing at $14.5B, alone eclipse Intel’s entire company-wide revenues, which sat at $14.1B. This explains why Nvidia has switched tack from gaming to AI over the past couple of years. Although the perceived lack of attention has proven frustrating for gamers, these numbers speak for themselves.
Although the GeForce RTX 4090 is the most powerful graphics card for gaming, we think most gamers will find the GeForce RTX 4070 more suitable for their needs, with its appealing balance of performance to cost.
