PC gamers with Socket AM4 motherboards are being awarded a cheap way to get an awesome gaming CPU, as AMD is releasing another Zen 3 CPU with 3D V-Cache. The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X3D has six cores and 96MB of L3 cache, and will be priced between the Ryzen 7 5800X and Ryzen 5 5600X.

The CPU was made official by US retailer Micro Center, which has struck an exclusive deal with AMD to sell the new gaming CPU in the US. The 5600X3D will also be a US exclusive, and won’t be available anywhere else.

Until now, the only AMD Socket AM4 Zen 3 CPU with 3D V-Cache is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which came out over a year ago. Like the Ryzen 5 5600X, the Ryzen 5 5600X3D has six cores, and the ability to execute 12 concurrent threads via AMD’s Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) tech. Unlike the 5600X, though, a total of 96MB of L3 cache is listed in the spec, which is the same amount as the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

Assuming it sticks to the same L3 cache structure as the 5800X3D, this would mean the Ryzen 5 5600X3D has 32MB of standard L3 cache, with a 64MB stack of 3D V-Cache on top of its single core die chiplet (CCD). As it only has six cores enabled, rather than eight, however, there’s only a total of 3MB of L2 cache listed, compared to 4MB on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

Meanwhile, the Ryzen 5 5600X3D clock speed is 100MHz lower than that of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, with a 3.3GHz base clock and 4.4GHz boost clock. Having so much cache on top of the chiplet makes it difficult for AMD to increase the clock speed without running into thermal issues, but the extra cache on its own still makes a massive difference to gaming performance.

We’ve been really impressed by AMD’s 3D V-Cache so far. While CPUs equipped with it can’t boost to the same clock frequencies as those without it, the extra cache gives you incredible gaming performance. In our Ryzen 7 7800X3D review, the latest 8-core CPU with 3D V-Cache consistently beat every other CPU we’ve tested in gaming frame rate tests.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X3D price

The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X3D price is $230, which is cheaper than the Ryzen 7 5800X.

Price: $230.

While this might initially look like a surprising move for AMD, it could be seen as a response to recent speculation that forthcoming Intel 14th-gen CPUs will work on LGA1700 motherboards, giving owners of older systems a cheap and easy upgrade path.

By using the veteran AM4 socket, the Ryzen 5 5600X3D has a huge support base of motherboards going all the way back to the first-gen Ryzen era in 2017. At a price of just $230, the 5600X3D could be a popular upgrade for owners of older AM4 systems.
