We love this this clever PC build, chimney, cooling, gaming PC. It's the heat mod we need. Shared on Reddit by creator scvready0808 shared it on Reddit, they show a custom duct that sends hot exhaust air straight out of a nearby window instead of back into the room.
The idea is surprisingly simple. A 3D-printed duct connects to the top of the PC case and feeds into an insulated hose that vents outside through a window. According to the creator, the goal wasn't to reduce component temperatures as much as it was to stop the room from turning into a sauna during long gaming sessions. They also swapped to a $30 insulated duct after finding that a standard aluminum hose still radiated too much heat indoors.
Why I think this is actually a smart idea
I think this is one of those DIY projects that looks ridiculous at first glance but makes a lot of sense if you've ever gamed in a small office during summer. High-end graphics cards can dump hundreds of watts of heat into a room, and that heat has to go somewhere. Instead of relying entirely on air conditioning, venting it outside tackles the problem at the source.
It won't be for everyone, but if your gaming room regularly becomes uncomfortable after an hour or two, this could genuinely make the experience much better.
It isn't a perfect solution
I don't think this is a universal fix either. Venting indoor air outside means replacement air has to enter the home somewhere else. In hot or humid climates, that could reduce the overall benefit, especially if you're already running air conditioning.
There's also the practical side. Rain protection, condensation, insects and airflow restrictions all need to be considered before drilling a window insert or routing ducting outside. Could this become more common?
I wouldn't be surprised if more PC enthusiasts experimented with ideas like this as modern gaming hardware continues pushing more heat into smaller rooms. Not everyone has space for a dedicated gaming room or wants to blast the AC every time they play.
It may never become mainstream, but for people who value a cooler room over a cleaner-looking setup, a PC chimney might be one of the most practical DIY cooling mods around.
